In Reply To HORROR STORY ABOUT MY CAR and SPEEDLAB NYC. >>>>>>> =( posted by joel(PA) on March 15, 2002 at 03:56 PM

Message : Well, as many of you probably do not know, i have been having some problems with my car over the past year. I will start out with some background info on me and my car...I got my '93 convertible in march of last year(2001) with the sole ambition of getting a NA>TT transplant.

: Two weeks after purchasing the car i took it to SPEEDLAB NYC to get the TT motor put in.

: Before buying it i was referred to TT.net from some member that posted a flame on how "his z car could kill any vette with a few hundred in mods" on a vette forum i used to frequent. At that time i didnt even know what a Z was. I used to own a '93 Corvette LT-1, but after seeing too many other people with them, i decided to do something more exotic and original. So i posted the infamous NA>>TT post, and some people actually helped me out!! Turns out i wasnt just another newbie asking the overrused question. Anyway, Arnel was one of the few people who talked to me about the conversion process. I also talked to Shawn and Chris 96-2+2(NYC) and they lended me some pointers. After some consideration, and some good words about guy(owner of speedlab) from Arnel, i decided to go with SpeedlabNYC would be my best bet. And that was a HUGE, HUGE mistake.

: I was originally going to go with Chris and Shawn from Long Island but they said it would be a while til they could get to it because they were working on their cars at the time. so i figured guy said three months so screw waiting lets get it done. After i took it Guy, chris told me i would be sorry, but at the time i didnt know chris or shawn well, or any of the other bad stories i have heard since dealing with guy. if i would have gone with them i would have the car now... i am sorry. real fuckin sorry. if i would have known what would be in store for me, i would have never ever taken it to speedlab. chris recommended me to bring it to them in the first place, but i didnt listen. HUGE MISTAKE.

: Before even buying my car, i talked to Guy about cost/power/parts/reliability of the Z's motor, and i figured i might as well put in mods while the motor would be tore down. I decided to go with a lot... JE pistons, 720 injectors, T28 Turbos, etc etc...(its in my profile) Anyway, i asked guy about how long it would take to do all this, he said it would be about 3 months. So i figured, hell yeah, its only march i cant really drive the car now anyway, i might as well take it now and have it for summertime. so, i would call and ask progress about once a month, then on the end of the 3rd month i asked about how much longer and he said about 2 more weeks(a phrase i would hear soon, and many more times after) So around the 5th month when i would call every week, i would still get "2 weeks" and then valve problems developed. Guy recommended stainless valves to solve the problem, so i dumped another thousand bucks into those hoping it would get my car to me. Well it didnt, so then they're were problems getting turbos from his supplier, so i decided to to get turbos on my own, so once again i could get my car. I bought a set from ScooterTTZ a good friend of Wolf and some other pittsburgh fella's. so i got them, drove the turbos to guys shop(suprise visit) to check out what all had been done to the car. And suprise! Nothing! the motor had been removed... pretty good for 3 months of work! So I was just at the beginning stages of aggrevation at this point. He told me now that he had the turbo's it wouldnt be long (2 weeks! suprise!) so, i call back, ask him on the progress.... problems with the machine shop, bla bla, so on so forth, GUY IS A GREAT TALKER, i give him that... as for any other skills, such AS RUNNING A BUSINESS... well he's an ass. oh, and did i mention that he has about 15 cars sitting at his shop... who else is getting screwed here? speak up? anyway... the phone game went on for months, and months. injector problems, excuses on top of excuses. 3 months turned to 6.

: The summer was over, it was september. The car was done(or was it), so i buy a plane ticket to fly into JFK expecting to grab the car and go, after all i talked to guy the week before and told him when i was flying in. So i get into JFK and call speedlab, i get guy's GF and she says he is out picking up some parts, and he didnt forget about me and will be picking me up shorty. I get into NYC around 9. I end up sitting in the airport til 1pm til guy picked me up. and even then, i rode along with him on some parts runs, we get back to his shop and my car is up on the lift. no exhaust, no downpipes, looks like the motor has just been dropped in, some of his little assfucks were putting piping on and shit. hooking up wires, i was like WTF? so, at about 7 the car is together, we start it up, fucking oil goes all over the floor, some plug was not placed in.(hello, theres a sign of knowledge) so, plug goes in, start it up, stall.... motor is not idling correctly. guy thinks it the fuel pump, so he replaces it. not the problem. ITS 11PM AT THIS POINT!!! 11PM! so he says, well, we will correct the idle problem later, just be careful with it on the drive home. (I live 5 hours away, u would think he would have the car ready for me so it wouldnt die on me on the way home or anything) so i start on my way home at midnight and drive about 2 hours before pulling over at a rest stop to sleep for a few. i was soo excited just to have my car, the idle problem didnt even bother me. So i wake up in the morning and drive home, (damn i loved the sound of the turbo intake etc) and continue the break in for the motor. The weekend passed and i put about 500 miles on it, and was ready to head up to upstate new york for school. I am about 2 hours into the 4 hour drive to rochester when i look in the rear view and see smoke.... WTF??? i was about to cry. remember, this is still granny driving break in miles... i couldnt believe it. so i call guy the next day and he says it probably just some oil in his exhaust he put on (he lent me it for the drive home, i guess he blew a turbo in it and it spewed oil into the resonators on his greddy exhaust). well, the smoke was no oil burning, but i had no idea, i drove it for another day before calling again telling him this was some serious smoke. So guy says it sounds bad, so i will come pick it up. well, i told him i had a day off school so i would trailor it down. When i take it down guy is amazed at how much it smokes when he pulls it off the trailer. so, i leave him the car and the trailer. so he figures its something with the turbos, i call back towards the end of the week and he says the turbo is shot to hell. somehow something got sucked into the turbo and ripped it all apart!!! in other words something came out of the motor, or something was left in the piping and ripped my turbo apart. Guy said, "I'm not trying to say its your fault or mine but it's bad." HOW IN THE FUCK WOULD IT BE MY FAULT? BULLSHIT!

: Now for the Turbo repair. Guy sends my turbos to turbonetics to be rebuilt. this is back in late september. somehow turbonetics now takes 6 months to rebuild turbos... so beware, LOL! what a crock of shit. so anyway, i call turbonetics and they have no t28's to be rebuilt from speedlab. so i call guy and ask him what is up, he says he will call turbonetics. So it is now february and i am wondering what the fuck is going on. i call guy and he says he puts the turbos under another name to save money(YEAH. OK) so at this time i am fed up with lies and what ever else has been going on. when i took the car back to guy back in sept. i told him to go ahead and bend me some custom exhaust and put a FMIC on it while it waited for the turbos. So, i call him at the end of february and ask him the status of the turbos(LOL) and i get the two week story i have gotten at least a dozen times before. i dont know turbonetics stays in business
